Artist-In-Residence: Meaghan Burke

Virtual Event

In continuation of our artists in residencies this winter, we welcomed New York cellist, vocalist, and composer Meaghan Burke in February. Her website describes her as “working in the space between contemporary music, improvised music, and songwriting.” Publications Dusted Magazine and The Deli write: Meaghan’s songwriting melds contemporary sonic aesthetics with her “velvety-dark”, jazz-inflected voice and an old-fashioned approach to storytelling to produce “impossibly beautiful but in no way forgiving” songs which “skitter along the boundary between archaic pop and free-wheeling art song.”

Meaghan released two albums of her songs: “Other People’s Ghosts” in 2010 and “Creature Comforts” in 2017. “A Few Concerns,” her third album with The Rhythm Method string quartet, was released on January 15, 2021 on Gold Bolus Recordings.

Please enjoy this beautiful concert Meaghan recorded in our black box at The Foundry during her week long residency working on her multidisciplinary project in development titled “The Wandering Womb.”

“Meaghan Burke was the outstanding soloist, convincing both in long stretches of spoken monologue and in Brechtian sung ballads, which seemed tailored to her street-smart, feline voice.”
