Led by Maizy Broderick Scarpa, this 8-week course introduces the fundamentals of playwriting through exercises, tools, and practices that engage with the “play” of playwriting. Each class will focus on a building block of drama (dialogue, setting, character, etc), and will include in-class writing, discussion, and group feedback. Writers will leave with a variety of play-making exercises, scenes, and their own ten-minute play. Playing & Writing is the perfect foundation for new writers (or new-to-playwriting writers) itching to dive in the deep end. It is also appropriate for seasoned writers looking to kick-start their creativity in a supportive community. Particular attention will be given to cultivating an environment – internally and in the wider group – that fosters support and creativity. Participants are expected to complete weekly writing explorations outside of class hours.
Maizy Broderick Scarpa is a playwright, theatre director, and performer, and these perspectives inform her teaching. In addition to on-on-one coaching, Maizy has taught at Barrington Stage Co, Shakespeare & Co, Hampton Shakespeare Festival, Dorset Theatre Festival, and in the Kurdish Regional Government. A proud member of the Dramatists Guild, her plays have been performed at Berkshire Playwrights Lab, Shakespeare and Co, WAM Theatre, Hubbard Hall, Method and Madness Theatre Co, and NYU Tisch’s Experimental Theatre Wing. She believes that all humans are artists and is enlivened by nurturing their creative journeys. Maizy is a former homeschooler who graduated from NYU/ Tisch with degrees in theatre and creative writing. You can often catch her voice on WBUR’s award-winning podcast Circle Round, recorded here in West Stockbridge. Maizy is the founder of BLOOM Creativity.
