POSTPONED: The Harlem Gospel Travelers

Fri, Sep 17 7:00pm

with opener Kimaya Diggs

This event has been postponed; we will keep this page active with updates regarding the new performance date.

The Harlem Gospel Travelers are not actually from Harlem. They came to Harlem, however, from far-flung corners of the five boroughs of New York City, and it was in Harlem, that legendary center of African-American culture, that they found their voices, through Gospel For Teens. They quickly moved from imitation to creation, writing their own songs and building original arrangements of traditional material from the ground up. They honed and tightened their harmonies. They learned when to shout and when to whisper. They went from a group of teenage students to a full-fledged gospel quartet. What you have before you is the distillation of all their hard work; the first full-length album from the Harlem Gospel Travelers. Drop the needle on the first track of their debut album “He’s On Time,” and you’ll realize immediately that The Harlem Gospel Travelers are right on time.

“It’s difficult to deny the talent of the Harlem Gospel Travelers and the musical transcendence of He’s on Time.” – Pop Matters

“A full on joyful noise.” – Flea Market Funk

Opener: Kimaya Diggs has mastered a genre-defying style. Inspired by the acrobatic folk renderings of Joni Mitchell, Ella Fitzgerald’s jazz stylings, and Lianne LaHavas’ soulful charisma, she draws skillfully from her lineage of musical pioneers, creating a musical lane all her own. With a playful presence and frank, transporting storytelling, Diggs’ mastery of her voice is the focal point of each performance, and a transfixing experience.
