Pittsfield High School Orchestra: Chamber Octet

The PHS Chamber Orchestra is already recognized by many as a fine ensemble that exemplifies hard work and dedication combined.

Under the artistic directorship of Alla Zernitskaya a select number of gifted and enthusiastic students meet to rehearse chamber music each weekday at 6:30 AM. The PHS chamber orchestra has performed a plethora of repertoire comprised of the major chamber works alone and combined with other professional groups and individual artists.

The orchestra has performed in Seiji Ozawa Hall, the Tanglewood Shed and at the David Geffen Hall Stage at Lincoln Center in New York City in March of 2016. The orchestra earned the runner up award for their performance and an award for the most original music selection.

The PHS Orchestra has also been recognized for its superior service to the Berkshire community’s artistic life. The Orchestra has performed for various organizations like Colonial Theatre, The Friends of the Berkshire Athenaeum, Berkshire Museum, Berkshire Bach Society, Berkshire Concert choir and many more.

In the past, members of the orchestra have held leading positions in other ensembles including the MMEA Western District Music Festival, MMEA All State Music Festival, Empire Youth Symphony Orchestra, New England Prep School Symphony, and YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles). During the summer, members of the PHS Chamber Ensembles attend internationally recognized music summer programs like Boston University Tanglewood Institute, YOLA summer program, the Eastman School of Music Quartet Program, and the Philadelphia Orchestra Program. Postgraduate members of the orchestra are very vocal members at renowned University music programs in the USA and Canada.

String Octet in E-flat major, Op. 20, was written by the 16-year-old Felix Mendelssohn during the fall of 1825 and completed on October 15. Written for four violins, two violas, and two cellos, this work created a new chamber music genre.
